What is a CNAME Record?

A CNAME (Canonical Name) record is a type of resource record in the Domain Name System (DNS) used to specify that a domain name is an alias for another domain.

For example, our domain name for this website is matricweb.com.au and the alias cname is www. This means that the DNS system will resolve the same IP address for either hostname.

It is also common practice to achieve the same results by using an A record instead of a CNAME record, and pointing to the same IP address for the www subdomain and the main domain name.
